Thursday Nights

These are my reports of the games we play and our views of the weaknesses and strengths of the games. I will be blunt, truthful and not always kind (except about my D&D Campaign!)

16th - Mini Review Show

August 2012Posted by Sir Keith Sun, August 19, 2012 12:48:49

Hi

Sorry, no post last week as I was at the Olympics, watching Jade Jones win gold in taekwondo for team GB. It was an amazing experience and worth the very late night and expense. To be honest I was as cynical as the rest but after the great starting cermony and visiting London (and seeing us win gold) I am now fully won over and think it was money well spent! Also as there are a number of holidays and events in August, it is always a disjointed month.

On a sadder note, Malcolm was taken very ill and we all wish him a quick and full recovery.

All in all - no Thursday night last week and a small crowd this week.

So, I bought round a number of games, mainly for the group to look at and comment upon. Firstly was Dungeon command that I have reviewed elsewhere on the site. This is a very good game, the components are great and the fact you can use them in the adventure system box sets is a great bonus. However the downside is the price. To play you need two box sets and at over £30 each, that is £60 for a two player game!!!!!

Speaking of which, the next game I bought over was Legend of Drizzt. The WOTC third adventure path set. I am currently playing this through with my son and the mini-campaign based on the books by R A Salvatore are great fun! The characters in this set are the main ones from the book and Drizzt himself does seem overly powerful (with two attacks per round). However it is still a great game and good introduction to D&D.

The next Game was Rex. I got this from Mark over at Grimtree Games, as part of the UK Games Network. Go to his site to see the unboxing video... This is based on the old Dune game and a tidy reproduction/rethink of a classic game. Now based on the Twilight imperium, the game looks fun to play and something we will be getting to the table once we are all there and holidays are finally out of the way.

Finally i also bought King of Tokyo! No review but a chance to play several games of this classic game. Again we stonped Tokyo and each other, playing the cards and trying different tactics. It was one by killing everyone and by getting over 20 points and all had fun playing it. However though others won, I continued the tradition of the game owner not winning..........

Be safe and I will talk soon, in the interrim I am looking to either add more RPG to this site or start a new site, linked to this one, solely dedicated to RPG and the UK.... News to follow.......
